The Texas Gulf Coast was once populated with lush grasslands and beautiful wild mustangs roaming throughout. Situated in the very heart of this Wild Horse Desert, Bishop, Texas celebrates the history and spirit of this unique part of South Texas with its annual Wild Horse Desert Roundup and BBQ Cookoff. Sponsored by the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, the yearly celebration is held last weekend in April and offers up some down home food, festivities and fun to residents and visitors alike.

This year’s event highlights will include a 5k-run/2 mile walk, a Work Out Wars competition, Mission 22 Dedication, a silent auction, and music by DJ Noe with tejano and country performances by Arturo Chavez y su Conjunto Alegre, Juaquin Chavez Y Los Conjunto Boys, Lil Michael and Conjunto Jamms, Ceasar Silva, 5 Will Rise and Hyde after 9. This uniquely South Texas celebration also wouldn’t be complete without an IBCA Texas State Championship BBQ Cookoff for over $5,000 in cash and trophies in delicious divisions such as fajitas, chicken, ribs, beans, pan de campo, Chef’s Open and more.

A schedule of events and application forms for vendors and the 5k-run can be found below. For more information on the BBQ cookoff, view the flyer below or enter online.
